‘Author Visit’ from Tristan Bancks

On Thursday 2nd March our Year 9 cohort were privileged to participate in a Narrative Writing Workshop by acclaimed local Australian teen and children’s author, Tristan Bancks. In between working on his upcoming new books, Tristan tours schools in Australia and Asia inspiring students with his motivational talks about his writing techniques, life incidents that fostered a creative writing streak, and inside details about his popular novels. Tristan has written hilarious anecdotal books for older children and developed some highly engaging male teen characters in his ‘Matt Slater Cool Hunter’ series along with the new mystery/action genre of the ‘Two Wolves’ novels that has compelled students to book out all the copies in the Library!

In the workshops, students learnt some specific literary strategies from our visiting author, and then listened to an audio prompt before putting pen to paper to write their own narrative masterpiece. The classes were amazed by the examples of incredible imagination as they heard fellow classmates read out their stories. Vivid sensory imagery and intriguing plot lines were shared, revealing the fantastic writing skills of Benowa State High School students! There was a question time and students were able to delve deeper into Tristan’s treasure trove of authorial experience and to garner extra writing tips. During the day teachers also took the opportunity of gaining insight into what makes an author tick! Many thanks to Mr Matt Pickersgill for collaborating with Library to bring Tristan Bancks to Benowa State High School!
