Gold Coast rugby 7's

17/09/2013

With Rugby Union 7-a-side becoming an Olympic event, there is plenty of movement in Queensland and Australia in aiming to find talent and develop the skills of both males and females in the sport. Last month we had female students represent the Gold Coast in 7’s at Ballymore, Brisbane. Next term we have our own 7’s carnival for the girls on Thursday, 24 October and boys on Thursday, 31 October. The inaugural carnival last year was a great success with all 5 fields being used to accommodate the various age groups. An invite certainly goes out to any parents to come and watch the footy and visit the refreshments tent!

The first weekend of next term will see the start of the IRB Sevens World Series at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast. Due to Benowa’s involvement in Rugby, the Queensland Rugby Union have organised that an International team playing in the tournament will visit the school on Wednesday, 9 October at morning tea in the sports hall. There is also a ticket offer for families from Benowa at a cost of $50 for a family of 4 on Saturday, 12 October which is significantly reduced. If we can sell 50 family passes, 12 students from Benowa will be offered the opportunity to form a guard of honour when the Welsh team (yep the team visiting is the Welsh team – no, I can assure you it wasn’t up to me!) runs on to the field at Skilled Park on Saturday, 12 October. The school that sells the most family passes will also win a Sevens Rugby Clinic at their school run the by the Australian Sevens Team. Our schools password will be WALES, so to purchase, go to www.ticketek.com.au/trysevens and enter the password WALES. The offer closes  Tuesday, 1 October.

So see you there and don’t forget about our 7’s – it’s just as exciting!
