Health and physical education

Junior Health and physical education (HPE) is one of the essential learning's and all students at Benowa State High School in years 7, 8 and 9 participate in this subject. The aim is to involve the students in vigorous and fun activity and to give them a sound knowledge base to help with healthy lifestyle decisions.

Year 8 mainstream classes are timetabled for one 35 minute theory lesson per week and one 70 minute practical activity lesson.

Year 9 mainstream classes have two 70 minute time blocks per week. Both of these allocations fall short of desirable daily activity but they serve as a starter in helping to redress the woeful health prospects of our youth.

The special junior programme, Sports excellence is offered after application and interview to students wishing to pursue a more active and intensive course of study. These class groups in year 7, 8 and 9 have timetabled PE lessons on two lines per week. This equates to six weekly lessons in grade 8 and eight lessons in year 9. This program has been a tremendous success and continues to grow in popularity.

Year 9 elective junior subjects.

  • Sports excellence touch football
  • Sports excellence soccer
  • Sports excellence volleyball

providing specialist learning opportunities for students wishing to stretch their abilities. Key staff members in all these areas offer excellent learning opportunities and enjoyment for students.

Senior elective subjects in the authority subjects - Physical Education and Health Education as well as the non-authority recreation studies, continue to draw a popular student response, allowing for a mix of high-energy activity and serious academic pursuit including detailed studies in biomechanics, exercise physiology and contemporary social issues in sport.

In addition to the timetabled curricula, the HPE department conducts and organises all school sport, homestead carnivals and many key specialist coaching programmes, especially in Volleyball, Touch and Rugby.
