Cultural Merit/ Excellence Programs

 

Cultural Merit Entry can be gained in the following areas: Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Merit entry is available across Years 7 to 12. Students will be selected in order of merit from the documents submitted for evaluation. The number of available places will depend on whether the enrolment capacity has been met for that particular year level.

The school offers Dance and Music Excellence programs.

Excellence Program/Merit Entry applications for Year 7 2020 have closed for Term 1 testing. 

Applications continue to be accepted for testing in Term 2. 

Term 2 testing will occur in June 2019.

How do I Apply?

Cultural Merit Entry Applications will be assessed on the following:

• School reports from previous two semesters

• A folio of the student’s most recent works (Visual Art ONLY).

• DVD demonstrating student performance (excludes Visual Arts)

• Documentary evidence of achievements to support the application, including certificates from external competitions, references from current teachers or music tutors etc

All of the above documents are to be submitted for evaluation with an Application for Merit Entry 2019-All Year Levels form​​​​ to the main office for your student to be considered for Cultural Merit at Benowa.

Year 7 2020 Cultural Excellence/Merit Program Entry:

Cultural Excellence/Merit Programs include Dance ExcellenceMusic Excellence, Drama Merit and Visual Art Merit. Students wanting to gain entry into these programs will be required to attend auditions prior to selection (excluding Visual Art as a portfolio is required). 2020 Music entry audition will be held Thursday, 21 and Thursday, 28 March 2019. Dance auditions will be held Monday, 18 and Tuesday, 19 March 2019 and Drama auditions will be held on Monday, 18 March 2019. Book an audition time.

How do I Apply?

Cultural Excellence Applications will be assessed on the following:

• School reports from previous Two semesters

• A folio of the student’s most recent works (Visual Art ONLY).

• Documentary evidence of achievements to support the application, including certificates from external competitions, references from current teachers or music tutors etc

All of the above documents are to be submitted for evaluation with a Application for Merit and Excellence Entry-Year 7 2020 form to the main office. Application forms must be submitted for your student to be eligible to attend the audition.

Dance Excellence Auditions

All Dance Excellence applicants are expected to attend an audition:
 
 1.  Informal Interview with teacher.
 
 2.  Perform a prepared dance (2-3 minutes).
 
 a)  2-3 minutes performance in any style
 
                        OR

b) 1 minute in one style and 1 minute in a ​contrasting style (e.g. Contemporary or Hip Hop)

 * Performances may be choreographed by studio or school teacher.  If no other work is available it may be student choreographed.​

Drama Merit

Submit an audition on USB to Demonstrate your dramatic abilities

FOLIO OF WORK

Applicants should submit the following:

USB with two contrasting performances.

These could include:

  •  a short solo script
  •  a poem
  •  section from a play

Certificates awarded. Drama prizes and letters of recommendation should also be included in the application.​

Music Excellence Auditions 

All Music Excellence applicants will be required to attend an audition:

*Perform two short contrasting pieces (not a band piece/something from your music 

study book).

*Demonstrate or discuss all instruments you can play (e.g. Flute and Guitar).

Complete a short theory test.

*Informal interview with teacher—bring certificates—exam results, etc.​ 

Visual Art Folio of Work

Applicants may submit one or both of the following:

 1. Visual Diary with at least eight art works. eg. drawings, paintings, prints.

 2. Photographs of art works including sculpture, origami, large paintings in a display book or on a USB.

* Certificates awarded, Art prizes and letters of recommendation  from Artists and teachers should also be included in the application.

Where possible it is best to show a range of artistic skills. Include 2 to 3 different media.​ ​
