In Week 1 of school, parents and students received information about the 2020 Sport Program and the changes that would occur given the move from weekly sport to five cluster days across the year. Since the introduction of the online selections, the uptake from students and parents across all year levels has been minimal. From this and subsequent parent feedback (specifically for the Year 7s to 10s), it would appear that the program designed at the end of 2019 no longer suits the needs of the school cohort.
As such, the choices for students to participate in sport have changed. It is our intention to have the vast majority of students in the GC5 interschool sport program, as we feel it best meets the needs for meaningful sporting interactions. This is especially so given that it has two tiers designed to provide access for our students to both highly competitive and more participation focused sports. GC5 Interschool Sport will be available to all students from Year 7 to 12. These Wednesday GC5 Cluster Days are compulsory school days and as such, irrespective of the choice that students make, attendance is expected. The Year 7s and 8s will be participating in an Alternative School Day and the Year 9s and 10s will be in their regular classes.

Year 9-10 | Regular classes | Assembly PDP | Regular classes | Regular classes |
The online selection survey sent out to parents via email will now be closed. We understand this information may change your child’s decision (which you may have already selected online). The HPE/Sport Department will be holding an opportunity for students to check, and where necessary, adjust their sport choice. This will occur at the First Lunch Break (immediately following assembly) on Wednesday 12 February 2020 in the Sports Hall. I would encourage your child to check their sport to confirm it is what they wish to participate in.

*Please note students on regular traineeships do not need to choose a sport.
It is our vision that in 2020, Benowa State High School will have a significant presence in the GC5 Interschool program at both the competitive and participation focused levels. We are advocates of providing meaningful and positive sporting experiences for our students and we envisage the GC5 competition to provide this for us.
We thank you for your support of the changes in advance.
Yours sincerely,
Mark Rickard
