Computer and internet

The use of technology for all students at our school is essential for enhancing their learning and increasing their level of productivity.

From this point onwards, we see it as vital for your child to have a laptop in the classroom to ensure they don't miss out on any opportunities.

After extensive research and consultation the BYOD program has now been introduced to include students within all year levels from 2015 onwards. Every teacher at Benowa SHS aims to integrate the use of technology into their lessons.
The BYOD has the varied functionality that will allow students to consume information as well as produce information in a mobile form through:
  • Having instant access to resources and assessment for all classes
  • Some textbooks available in PDF format. This not only alleviates the need to carry heavy textbooks in their school bag, it provides on-demand access to these rich resources.
  • A wide range of classroom web tools as part of the ever-evolving digital platform for learning.
  • 24/7 access to technology for students
  • Access to teacher resources through the use of MS OneNote

Why BYOD? - Bring/Buy Your Own Device

The school has a clear objective to have every student with BYOD access for school. Although having a BYOD laptop is not mandatory, there may be an impact on a student's accessibility to certain resources, e.g. Online textbooks for subjects where no hard copy textbooks are available.

Student Username and Password

Once a child has enrolled at Benowa SHS, it will take up to 72 hours for a Managed Internet Service (MIS) login to be automatically generated, which will then allow them to access the network. This includes the capacity to log on at school, along with accessing their school email.

The Benowa SHS IT Department prints a sticker with this automatically generated login account for each and every student, which is provided to them at the beginning of every school year. For enrolments throughout the year, students can request a sticker to be created via a visit to the IT Department.

The students email address is the student username followed by ''
For example

The number within the email address is automatically generated, and has no direct relationship to the student.

Once students receive their DETE login details, they will be required to change their password on their very first attempt to log in.

When creating a password, the following conditions must be met:

  • At least 8 characters in total (e.g. letters, numbers, alpha-numericals, etc.)

  • At least 1 number;

  • At least 1 uppercase letter; and

  • Cannot contain any part of the student's name

Once a student has their own BYOD laptop, and they have also received their MIS login details within 72 hours of enrolment, they can gain instant access to the school's network, via the Benowa SHS BYOD Connect app, which is located @ Connect (ZIP, 123MB)

The student will then also have access to a range of software and printers.

Please note, that the BYODConnect app only works for Windows-based PC's.  It is not available for Apple devices.

Student Advantage - free Microsoft Office software for students' personal computers

All state school students from Prep to Year 12 can now download multiple free copies of the Microsoft Office 365 Suite to their personal home and mobile computer equipment.

Students who want the free software will need an active Managed Internet Service (MIS) login, school email account and password - those who don't have these should contact their school's MIS Administrator or class teacher.

Currently, MS Office Suite 365 is available for students' personal equipment only - not equipment which is part of a school network.

Please access the following link for further information about downloading.

The link below is a step by step guide of how to install the Microsoft Office software for students' personal computers.

Hewlett Packard and Dell student portal

If you are considering purchasing a new device, Benowa State High School has a BYOD portal for HP and Dell laptops. This portal has a range of devices that would be suitable to use in a school environment as well as warranty for a school used device.

We are unable to recommend one particular device over another due to our adherence to the “Public Sector Ethics Act 1994” where we have a “duty to provide advice which is objective, independent, apolitical and impartial”.
