Benowa State High School is a unique institution with the structure of the state secondary schools' system. Founded in 1980, Benowa State High School is one of the Gold Coast's leading co-educational schools. At Benowa State High School we take very seriously our motto- striving and caring, adopting it as our operating philosophy from its earliest years. It is known by every student, recognised by parents and teachers as the basis for the management of behaviour, and respected by the community as the underlying reason for the school's excellent reputation as a 'School for Achievers'. We have a number of internal support agencies covering many needs and the learning support centre is one of them.

The centre provides and promotes a service to students to help in the areas of literacy and numeracy. Individual one-on-one tutoring is available for years 7-12 students. Programs are designed around specific areas/needs of each student. We have volunteer tutors who visit the school and spend time helping students with literacy and numeracy skills as well as learning assistance in some subject areas. For the literacy program attention is given to students to becoming more competent in the use of language skills, grammar, spelling and sentence construction. The numeracy program offers students grounding in basic mathematics. Each student is given assistance in being able to understand the basic principles and concepts and enabling them to build on these skills.

All our students are continually being challenged because of interesting and diverse programs offered to them. Philosophy of the centre is to ensure that all students leaving the program will have:

  • higher self-esteem

  • improved reading and mathematical skills

  • confidence in their own abilities

To accomplish all this, the centre is always looking for new volunteers. If you are interested, have the skills and time available, we would like to hear from you. From past experiences both volunteers and students have both gained a great deal from their involvement in our learning support centre. You are welcome to contact our study centre directly to speak with our coordinator Glenys Wills on (07) 55827 390.
