Urgent Message - Sun Safety - Compulsory wearing of hats

Dear Parents/caregivers,

As we enter the hottest months of the year, a reminder about the sun safety of our children.

The school’s sun safety policy is specific about the wearing of hats by students. To support the policy the P&C introduced a basic low cost broad brimmed hat two years ago that would afford students protection in the sun. These hats are compulsory uniform for Year 8 and 9 students and next year these hats will be compulsory for Years 7-10. The hat design continues to be improved. All other students, currently Years 10, 11, 12 are required to wear their hat of choice whilst in the sun. These times include, but are not limited to:

  • During health and physical education lessons
  • During lessons where teachers have students in the sun
  • During sport
  • During lunch break when playing in the sun
  • Whilst sitting in the sun and eating lunch

All teachers are aware of the requirement for students to wear hats and they too have been encouraged to model this practice of wearing sun protection. Your P&C continues to source grants to provide seats for students in shaded part of the school’s grounds and we thank them for their efforts.

Could you please ensure that your student has an appropriate sun protection hat with them at school and we will continue to be vigilant in the requirement for students to wear their hats.

Students who fail to wear their hats as directed will be subject to the behaviour management consequences for not being in school uniform. Students will not be permitted to participate without their hats in activities/events where sun protection is required.

Thank you for your support. We are seeing more and more teenagers with sun damaged skin than ever before - the case for wearing hats is compelling.

Sincerely

Mark Rickard
Executive Principal
