Student Resources Scheme

Purpose

In accordance with the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006, the cost of providing instruction, administration and facilities for the education of students enrolled at State schools who are Australian citizens or permanent residents, or children of Australian citizens or permanent residents, is met by the State.  Parents are directly responsible for providing textbooks and other personal resources for their children while attending school.  In recognition that these costs can be high, the school operates a Student Resource Scheme (the "scheme") that enables a parent to enter into an agreement with the school that, for a specified annual participation fee, provides for the temporary use by the student of prescribed textbooks and/or other resources, and/or the purchase of consumables and materials for the student.

What is a Student Resource Scheme (SRS)?

As a service to assist parents with the cost of educational resources, Benowa State High School choose to operate a student resource scheme (SRS).  The SRS is a scheme that provides participants with a cost effective alternative to purchasing textbooks, resource materials, practical equipment and/or consumables, for student's use while attending school.  This substantially reduces the financial burden to parents purchasing expensive resources.  Our scheme is fully endorsed by the Benowa State High School Parents and Citizens Association.

A student resource scheme enables a parent to enter into a written agreement with the school that, in return for payment of a specified annual participation fee, provides for the participating student's temporary use of prescribed textbooks and other resources.  The scheme is not to be used to raise funds for other purposes.  Participation fees are to be directly applied to fund the service delivered by the scheme.  The scheme provides the entire package for the specified participation fee, and is not available in part.

Participation in the SRS is voluntary.  A parent who does not wish to join the scheme is responsible for providing the student with the items that would otherwise have been provided to the student by the scheme as detailed on the Year Level Requirements List, to enhance the student's ability to engage with the curriculum.  Please refer to the itemised list for each year level below.

If you do not wish to participate in the SRS, please indicate this on the Participation Agreement Form and return to the school via email to srs@benowashs.eq.edu.au or drop it back to the Student Services window.

The student resource scheme does not include:

  • a voluntary financial contributions request to supplement the instruction, administration and facilities for the education of the student at the school
  • student internet access
  • resources funded by the state through appropriation funding to support the teaching of the Australian curriculum
  • optional school activities such as excursions, camps and performances
  • graduations and formals
  • Stationery list supplies.

Opting out

A parent who does not wish to join the scheme is responsible for providing the student with the items which would otherwise have been provided under the scheme to enable the student to engage with the curriculum.

Distribution of the Student Resources

During the first two weeks of Term 1, participating students will be distributed their relevant textbooks, novels, a USB loaded with software for their BYOD.  Other consumable items and practical equipment will be made available during classes.

Unpaid Fees

The school operates the Student Resource Scheme to benefit all eligible students.  It is not viable for the school to provide this service if fees are owing.  Parents who have agreed to participate in the SRS at this school have entered into an agreement and as such there is an obligation to pay these fees in exchange for the use of the school resources.

Students may not be invited to participate in any non-compulsory or non-curriculum activities including Senior Formal, Reef Trip, Ski Trip, purchase of senior jersey, or other activities if they have outstanding school fees.  Please refer to clause 31 of the Student Resource Scheme Participation Agreement form, which indicates "Where participation fees are overdue, the Principal has the discretion to exclude a student from an optional school activity."  Should you be experiencing financial hardship, please contact the Finance Office to discuss individual circumstances and potential payment options
