Student code of conduct

Education Queensland is committed to provisions that ensure all young Queenslanders have a right to and receive a quality education.

To achieve this, our school has a Student Code of Conduct that respects the following rights:

  • the rights of all students to learn
  • the rights of teachers to teach
  • the rights of all to be safe

Our plan aligns with the national framework for values education in Australian schools.

All members of our school community work in partnership with parents to develop self management skills in our students, so that our young people leave Benowa State High School as resilient, confident and responsible young adults.

School beliefs about behaviour and learning

Benowa State High School’s teachers and students try daily to live out the words of the school motto of “Striving and caring”. Ours is a house of learning, where respect matters most, respect of self, respect of others, respect of the environment and property.

Responsible Thinking Room (RT)

Students who disrupt the learning of other students in the classroom will be sent to the responsible thinking room. They will be supervised in this room by the behaviour management teacher who will help them to think responsibly, to prepare a contract of behaviour and to negotiate with their teacher to re-enter the classroom.

Detention Process

At Benowa State High School there is an expectation that students wear the correct school uniform and arrive promptly each day. If a student is late or wearing incorrect uniform, they need to bring a note of explanation from their caregiver. The procedures regarding this process are as follows:

Detention issued

  • In instances where students are not in correct uniform without a valid reason, they will be issued a lunchtime detention
  • In instances where students arrive late to school without a valid reason, they will be issued with a lunchtime detention.
  • In instances where students truant from class/classes they will be issued an afterschool detention.

Lunchtime detentions

  • Lunchtime detentions are held on the same day they are issued.
  • Lunchtime detentions are held during second break (from 1:10 to 1:25pm) in B08 (V03 during building renovations)
  • Students and parents will be notified via Compass and SMS/push notification and will be directed to read Compass Detention correspondence.
  • The detention will appear on the student’s Compass timetable.

First afterschool detention

  • In the event that a student does not attend their scheduled lunch time detention, or has repeated uniform infringements not appropriately addressed, they will automatically be issued an afterschool detention to be held the next applicable day.
  • Afterschool detentions are held from 2.55-3.25pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the RTR (room IRT1).
  • Students will be notified via email, and this detention will appear on their Compass timetable.
  • Caregivers will be notified via SMS and an email via Compass.
  • Students may have their detention moved to another day by visiting Mrs Sabelja or Mrs Thompson in the RTR.

Second afterschool detention

  • In the event that a student does not attend their scheduled afterschool detention, they will automatically be issued a second afterschool detention to be held the next applicable day.
  • Afterschool detentions are held from 2.55-3.25pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays in the RTR (room IRT1).
  • Students will be notified via email, and it will appear on their Compass timetable.
